You have a newborn baby
When monitoring new born babies the emphasis is on sleep safety, you want to be alerted if baby's breathing becomes irregular. A range of breathing, respiratory and movement baby monitors are available to meet your budget or particular circumstances. The Respisense Buzz Breathing Effort Monitor is completely portable and can be used anywhere your baby sleeps, including fixed or travel cots, car seats, baby seats and even on granny's lap. Baby movement monitors will alert you if your baby stops breathing for 15 seconds. The Snuza mobile baby monitor works in the same way.

You have more than one child
Some audio baby monitors can work with two parent units and the majority of them will give excellent and secure audio transmission to the parent unit. However, for twins, triplets or simply monitoring more than one child you need a video baby monitor. The majority of models will monitor up to 4 rooms often with autoscan and even sleep mode.
Standard wireless baby video monitors can be affected by home electronics such as broadband which, in some cases, can cause images to be less than perfect. However, a number of screen sizes are available including large 5.6" monitor screens. The Ethos large screen monitoring system will take additional monitor screens or additional cameras and can even be expanded to include an outdoor camera to make monitoring your baby outside a realistic proposition.

Digital video monitors are becoming increasingly popular and there are many reasons for this. Digital Baby Monitors are less prone to interference from home electronics and the transmission signals are much stronger resulting in clearer images on the parents units. It is important to note that digital monitor images are not as smooth as analogue monitors.
Many video monitors have facilities for additional cameras. If you think that you may need to expand your monitoring system then ensure that your supplier carries them as stock items.

You need a travel baby monitor
A number of monitors are designed for or ideally suited to travelling portability. You want to be able to monitor your baby online
Parents can now monitor baby via computers and you don't need a science degree to set it ip. When choosing a baby mointor, consider these points and discuss them with your supplier:
- Will the baby monitor be placed near microwaves, cordless phones or broadband?
- Baby monitor signals can be affected by thick walls in older properties
- Monitor signal and transmission range is based on 'clear line of sight'
- Monitor images and clarity will be reduced when monitoring vertically
- Audio monitors will allow additional parents units but not baby units
- Monitor performance is more important than 'bells and whistles'
- Baby monitors with shielded transmission are far superior because they guard against others listening to your baby or your private conversations
- Your child may require more than one type of monitor dependent on health and your personal requirements
- Additional video monitor cameras make multi-room monitoring much easier
Finally baby monitors are sold as baby safety devices but they cannot replace good parental practice and responsibility for your baby is yours.
