What causes pain in labour?
Labour begins when the expectant mother's uterus (womb) begins to contract. This should not be confused in the days before labour starts with the tightening of the uterus which cause discomfort rather than pain.
Labour is said to start when regular contractions are experienced. Contractions increase in frequency and intensity throughout labour and can become painful in a similar way as may be experienced with other muscles in the body when vigorous exercise is undertaken.
At the same time as the contractions the opening into the uterus (the cervix) is stretching to eventually allow the baby to pass through into the birth canal.
When the opening to the cervix is fully open (dilated) the expectant mother begins what is known as the third stage of labour and culminates in the third stage when the baby is born. The baby passes through the birth canal and is born by a combination of the continuing contractions of the uterus and the expectant mother's conscious effort to push her baby out by using the muscles of her lower abdomen.
During pregnancy the expectant mother's body changes to prepare for childbirth with the ligaments of her pelvis loosening to allow her baby to pass through. Other changes occur too but unfortunately, despite this, it is almost a certainty that pain will be experienced.
Sometimes when it is necessary to start off labour, or stimulate it if progress is slow, labour may be more painful than otherwise. First labours are generally more painful than subsequent ones.
Every person's appreciation of pain is different and what one person can accept, another may find extremely painful.
Why should I use TENS? Mama Tens Device
Most expectant mothers prefer to keep drug use to a minimum even though they expect labour to be painful. The use of TENS immediately pre-birth helps manage this pain and, because it helps, the use of pain killers such as analgesics and epidural injections is minimised and may even be negated altogether. TENS does not make the mother drowsy or cause her to lose consciousness and so a TENS-birth should result in a more pleasant and meaningful experience.
When should I use TENS?
Throughout labour. MamaTENS is used to help suppress the pain you experience during all stages of labour. It is particularly effective in early labour.
